Do You Leave the Car at the Hong Kong–Shenzhen Border? | 2026

Be prepared to leave the vehicle for passenger clearance. The checkpoint, direction, lane and officers’ instructions determine the procedure; staying in the car is not guaranteed.

This is one of the first questions travellers ask before booking. Some people hear that the whole crossing happens inside the car; others expect to carry every suitcase through a hall. The practical process is easier to understand when the Hong Kong and Shenzhen sides are explained separately.

Have each passenger’s documents ready before reaching the control point. Some vehicle-lane procedures allow passengers to remain seated, but follow any instruction to leave the car or present baggage. Confirm the applicable procedure for the booked direction rather than assuming the return is identical.

A private-car booking reduces transport changes; it does not remove immigration or customs checks.

On arrival at the Shenzhen side, passengers should be ready to leave the vehicle and complete passenger clearance on foot. The vehicle uses its assigned lane and meets the passengers again after clearance.

Allow separately for stopping, walking, passenger inspection and reunion with the vehicle. There is no verified fixed minute allowance for every trip; queues, extra inspection and assistance needs can change this part of the journey.

1. The driver stops at the designated position on the Shenzhen side.
2. Passengers directed to leave the car take their personal bag and travel documents; ask officers about any approved assistance arrangement.
3. Walk into the passenger hall and complete clearance in the normal queue.
4. The driver completes the vehicle-lane process and waits at the confirmed meeting point.
5. Large bags normally remain in the vehicle unless officers request inspection.

Queueing and road time vary by checkpoint. The driver plans the crossing from the destination, pickup time, vehicle permit and live conditions; passengers do not need to make the decision alone.

• Shenzhen Bay — commonly considered for Nanshan and Shekou journeys; passenger clearance hours are not 24 hours.
• Lok Ma Chau / Huanggang — relevant to many central Shenzhen and late-night vehicle journeys, subject to the confirmed vehicle plan.
• Futian is primarily a passenger checkpoint rather than the normal route used by a cross-border private MPV.

Document requirements differ by nationality, residence status and direction of travel. A Hong Kong identity card by itself is not a universal travel document for entering Mainland China. Check each traveller with the relevant immigration authority before departure.

• A valid travel document for every passenger
• Any visa, endorsement or entry permission required for that passenger
• A small personal bag with phone, medication and valuables
