A private car is not automatically the better product. If you can reach West Kowloon easily, have one small bag and are going to a Shenzhen address near a rail station, high-speed rail is usually cheaper and may be quicker. The private MPV becomes worth comparing when the stations are only the middle of a much longer journey.

Count the parts before comparing the price
The published private-car price for central Hong Kong–Shenzhen routes starts from RMB 700 / HKD 810 per vehicle, one way. For four travellers, compare that with four tickets plus the taxi or metro at both ends. For one traveller, do not divide the car fare by four just because another group could have done so.

Choose for the difficult part of your journey
If the difficult part is price, rail often wins. If it is moving children and luggage, reaching a factory far from a station, landing late or keeping a group together, the door-to-door car may save effort even when it does not promise a shorter border queue. Use complete addresses and the same departure time when requesting both options.

Check the rail operator for the required departure, ticket class and availability instead of inserting a remembered fare. For both options, use the same doors and required arrival time. The return journey may produce a different choice.
